'Children use play in the natural environment to learn of the world they inhabit with others. It is the very process of learning and growth, and as such all that is learnt through it is of benefit to the child.' (Welsh Assembly Government Play Policy, 2002)
The elements provide rich play opportunities, stimulate all the senses and provide a connection with the natural world. Earth, air, fire and water provide resources for children’s play and are aspects of the outdoor environment which children are driven to explore and interact with. Providing opportunities for children to play with the elements is a fundamental role of practitioners working directly with children
This experiential and outdoor workshop explores the theory and practice of providing access to the elements.
- Gain direct practical experience of earth, air, fire and water
- Develop skills to facilitate access to the elements
- Be encouraged to consider how to develop similar opportunities within their play setting
- Identify solutions
- Explore theoretical links
- Consider risk-benefit management issues related to playing with the elements
Who is it for?
This workshop is aimed at practitioners working directly with children including:
- School staff
- Youth workers
- Community and voluntary groups
- Childcare settings
This workshop is delivered outside. It is the responsibility of the organisation booking the workshop to identify and arrange for this. Ideally, we require open space with permission to use a raised fire and access to trees, a water source and other natural features. Please contact Play Wales to discuss the workshop requirements and activities in more depth and we will do our best to advise on potential spaces.
