New report on negative effects of too much screen time
A new report by Nature Canada shows the negative effects of too much screen time on children and young people’s health in Canada.
The report – Screen Time vs Green Time: The Health Impacts of Too Much Screen Time – outlines the changes in the way Canadian children and young people are spending their time and summarises the research on the effects of screen time.
The report also includes tips for parents to reduce children’s screen time and spend more time outdoors.
Key findings from the report include:
- Outdoor play is essential for children’s healthy development
- More than half (55 percent) of children exceed the recommended amount of screen time
- 87 percent of children don’t get enough sleep or exercise
- Young people who spent more time on social media and smart phones are more likely to report mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression.
