Children across Wales need better access to outdoor play opportunities

Early analysis of new UK wide research indicates that children across the UK urgently need more and better access to outdoor play opportunities.  Adults surveyed say that play opportunities in their community would improve if:
  • there were more places to play
  • it was easier to get to play spaces
  • traffic was slowed down
  • adults were more tolerant of play

Local community events, such as Playday celebrations, provide an ideal opportunity to bring together children, families and wider community.  The biggest difference we can all make in our communities is to improve the environment and conditions to make it easier for children to access outdoor play opportunities.

Today thousands of children and young people across Wales will be playing out and celebrating Playday – the national day for play. Hundreds of local and regional play events are taking place across Wales and the rest of the UK to promote the importance of children’s right to play.

We are calling on everyone – parents, grandparents, carers, childcare providers and support staff across the UK to help us celebrate and promote the importance of play.

Celebrate that:
  • Playing is free
  • Playing is a child's right (UNCRC, Article 31)
  • Playing supports physical and emotional health and wellbeing
  • Playing supports respect and appreciation of the natural environment
  • Playing promotes development and learning.

Mike Greenway, Director of Play Wales said:

‘Today and over the last thirty years there have been thousands of great events across Wales celebrating Playday and children’s right to play. In Wales we have made some great steps forward but, now there’s more of a need than ever, for us as a society to work together to improve the environment to make our communities more play friendly to increase and improve outdoor play opportunities for our children all year round.’
