Health, social care and childcare qualifications reform

Following a sector review Qualifications Wales is using its regulatory powers to restrict qualifications in health, social care and childcare and is funding the development of a new suite of qualifications which will be available from September 2019.

The new qualifications will replace more than 200 qualifications which are currently available. Current qualifications will continue to be funded until this date. There will also be a transition period to allow learners who are already undertaking qualifications to be funded to complete their qualifications.

Qualifications Wales has announced that the awarding body partner to develop the new qualifications are a consortium of City & Guilds London Institute and WJEC. For childcare, the new Children’s Care, Learning Development and Play qualifications will include knowledge and understanding of children’s play, as this was highlighted as lacking during the review. This will not replace any of the existing playwork qualifications or current regulatory requirements for staff to hold playwork qualifications.
