Call for more 20pmh zones to protect children

At a debate in the Senedd Assembly Members called for more 20mph zones to be introduced to protect children playing.

The debate was tabled by four AMs, including Joyce Watson who said:

‘It’s not going to add a lot of time to your journey … If you have got a play park and they [children] have to cross the road you have to reduce the speed limit. It’s common sense.’

One example cited during the debate was the Sandfields estate in Port Talbot which has seen a 48 per cent reduction in injuries from road accidents over a three year period following a 20mph speed limit being imposed.

Councils have been given £11.5 million this year to introduce more 20mph zones, to make roads safer and encourage people to walk and cycle.
