Children's engagement with the outdoors and sports activities

The Office for National Statistics has conducted an analysis of the UK Time Use Survey to better understand children’s engagement with the outdoors and sports activities in the UK between 2014 and 2015.

It found that children aged between eight and fifteen spent about an hour every day taking part in outdoor or sports related activities. The data was gathered by asking children to complete diaries, one on a weekday and the other on a weekend.

Boys on average spent more time taking part in sport activity than girls. Children also reported that they enjoyed taking part in sports, entertainment and cultural activities more than other outdoor activities. Time spent in playgrounds or designated play areas was categorised under entertainment and cultural activities.
