Almost 250,000 people in Wales without a local park
Fields in Trust (FIT) has published its annual Green Space Index for 2020, which is an analysis of the UK’s publicly accessible park and green space provision. FIT fears that parks and green space are at significant risk of loss to development and emphasises that we must act now to protect them.
FIT’s analysis shows that 2.7 million people in the UK are without easy access to a park or green space and the health and well-being benefits they deliver. In Wales, research shows that there are 241,253 people who live more than a ten-minute walk from a public park.
FIT fears the situation could get worse. FIT, in partnership with the Co-op, estimate that across the UK the total amount of green space provision per person could have reduced by 7.6 percent by 2040.
In response to the findings, FIT and the Co-op are calling on the UK Government to ensure the protection and provision of parks and green spaces for community well-being.
