Green spaces not equally accessible to all
Across the UK, 2.78 million people live further than a ten-minute walk from their nearest park or green space, making them not equally accessible to all. This is a finding from Field in Trust’s (FIT) annual Green Space Index for 2021, which is an analysis of the UK’s publicly accessible park and green space provision.
FIT emphasises local parks across the UK continue to be at risk of loss, despite their proven benefits to health and well-being. Provision of local parks is not a statutory service, meaning local authorities have no obligation to provide them for residents. The Green Space Index shows only that 6.4 percent of the UK’s publicly accessible local green space provision is legally protected.
