Changes to contact groups in childcare and playwork settings

From 19 July 2021, childcare and playwork settings in Wales will no longer have to keep children in consistent contact groups. Announcing the change in a written statement, the Deputy Minister for Social Services, Julie Morgan, said the change will come into effect in time for the school summer holidays.

As a result of the change, more children should be able to benefit from childcare and playwork services. Also, it should lessen the logistical and operational challenges for settings, particularly where children attend more than one setting, or use childcare or playwork provision alongside school.

The reliance on consistent contact groups will be replaced by a stronger focus on contact tracing. Settings will need to ensure that they maintain detailed records of attendance and activities to enable clear identification of close contacts to a positive case.

The Welsh Government’s Protective Measures in Childcare Settings guidance and associated Frequently Asked Questions will be updated to reflect the change. The guidance will also provide advice for settings on how to remain covid-secure.
